As stated before, you can utilize your in flight travel time more efficiently, you can make less unnecessary stops and avoid layovers, and again, have some control over how your baggage is handled. So regardless on your personal or political views on carbon footprints and fuel economy there are pros and cons to all travel methods, automobiles, trains, and busses all come with their own set of concerns regarding smog, fuel economy, and safety. So the only thing you can really do is find a way of making peace with your need or reason for travel and make the decision that is right for you.
